What is an Oligomeric Proanthocyandin?
An oligomeric proanthocyandin or OPC is a class of flavonoid complexes that are found in grape seeds. A flavonoid is plant secondary metabolites found in antioxidants. OPC is also found in the skin and they act as an antioxidant that protects cells from damage.
OPC can help on protecting the cells against the internal as well as external stress the body can have. For example, that would be anything that takes its toll on the body such as cigarettes and pollution. Another internal effect would be low blood fat and the lowering of blood pressure.
It would also help in preventing a blood clot.
OPC may be able to prevent such diseases as cardiovascular disease and aid in the lowering of cholesterol. They also prevent such cancers such as skin cancer. OPC’s have an antioxidant in them that causes them to stabilize the collagen and elastin in the skin. This reduces the chance that the skin will become tight and stiff.
The Proanthocyandin’s job is to protect against the environmental toxins that find it’s way into the body such as pollution, alcohol, pesticides and tobacco. The proanthocyandins help destroy the radicals in our body they can also help fight toxic environment. They also act as a build in sunscreen they help protect the cells from the UV rays. The sun can destroy up to 50 percent of the skin cells, that is why it is important to use sun screen to diminish the damage the sun will cause our skin, such as rapid aging of the external skin.
The proanthocyandins can also penetrate the blood brain barrier to help protect the brain and keep the mind alert and healthy. The chances of stroke decreases and it can help senility.
